DENNISD. OTTOBRE'S

Feb 13, 2008 Right after the Sept 1943 Armistice the Germans seized control of both the Terni and Armaguerra factories and most of the markings were deleted. The 1944 - early 1945 vintage Carcano rifles and carbines I have seen don't have dates, and many are don't have the factory name either. The 'acorn' on your M91/41 is an Italian proofmark. Jul 31, 2012 Manufactured beginning in 1892, the Carcano Model 1891 was a hybrid design combining a native Italian bolt with a Mannlicher magazine system. Gain twist rifling was used to extend the barrel life of this and all subsequent Carcano rifles until the Model 1938.

Having been in production for so long and serving both World Wars, the Carcano has gone through a great many changes. Clear identification can be time consuming but there are clear indicators to guide you. The Carcano and Israel by Dan Reynolds. Prior to the British withdrawal from Palestine in 1948 Jewish agents were combing Europe for rifles. They were buying anything they could find. A deal was struck for 8mm Carcano carbines and they were stored on an airfield in central Italy which had recently been used by the RAF.

13512 Italian M1870 Vetterli Moschetto with reversing cruciform socket bayonet. TORINO 1882 Single shot 10.4mm with dust cover intact. Bayonet serial number does not match the rifle. Has rust on 95% of external steel surfaces including the bayonet with some light pitting under most of it. Bore has one single pitt in the middle but the rest of it is clean and bright with strong rifling and a good crown. Stock has been well used with lots of little dings and scratches but remains solid with no cracks or large gouges. I found no defect to any of the mechanical aspects but as always, if you plan to fire it you are responsible for having it certified safe by a competent gunsmith.

$1000

15109 French M1874 M80 Gras Rifle in original 11mm Gras caliber. Bore has some pitting near the chamber end but is mostly bright and shiny with sharp rifling. Stock is well worn and has a small crack starting on the left side of the receiver right below the 'M80' marking and another one beginning just below the rear sight on the right side. Both cracks are quite small and should be visible in the pictures if you look for them. Part numbers do not match. Holy Water plug in stock remains intact but the cartouches are worn away. The rear band retaining spring in the stock has a broken stem underneath so it does not have enough tension to retain the band properly. There are scattered areas of rust and pitting on the steel surfaces. There is no cleaning rod.

My brain quit on me. again. Anyway, two questions. I have a 1939 dated M-38 in 7.35mm that has the crossed rifles stamped into the left side of the chamber area of the barrel. Does this mean that it shot a bit better or that it was a little closer to the blueprints than the others? Next question pertains to my M-41. It has very little in the way of anything stamped on it other than FAT 1947 in the stock, the serial number and the usual 'Made in Italy' on the barrel along with a crown in a square and a small star and what looks like an acorn. I would just like to know what arsenal made it.
